Meta Announces Plans to Discontinue Spark AR Platform
In a surprising move, Meta recently announced the shutdown of its Spark AR platform, effective January 14, 2025. This decision has significant implications for the augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) integrations across all of Meta’s platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp, affecting numerous creators and users who have come to rely on these innovative tools.
MetaSpark, launched in 2017, quickly became a cornerstone for AR experiences on Instagram and Facebook. It allowed third-party developers to create and share AR effects, enriching the social media experience for millions. However, with the platform’s closure, many of these beloved AR effects will no longer be available, including those integrated with machine learning (ML) for advanced 3D VR and AR experiences.
According to TechCrunch, Meta suggested its decision wasn’t related to the platform’s adoption or traction. The shutdown came after an in-depth evaluation, with Meta choosing to concentrate on products that it believes will better align with the future needs of both consumers and businesses. Although not directly mentioned, it's probable that Meta's focus will shift towards advancing its AI tools and initiatives.
One of the most unfortunate consequences of this shutdown is the impact on the Bridging Worlds AR filters. These two immersive experiences, which have captivated users with their innovative blend of reality and digital art, will also cease to be available from January next year. This is a significant loss for the community, as these filters have provided a unique way to engage with the content of the book “Bridging Worlds.”
Last Chance to Experience Bridging Worlds AR
Despite this setback, there is still time to enjoy these AR experiences before disappearing. For those who may have missed the opportunity or wish to explore further, the leading AR experience is ready to welcome you back and will be available until January 2025. Immerse yourself in a world where innovation seamlessly blends with reality. Simply scan the QR codes or search “Bridging Worlds” on Instagram filters to begin engaging with the experience.
Here are the details for the two AR experiences based on the book Bridging Worlds:
