Meta Quest 3 - review

I've got the scoop on the future of mixed reality with my in-depth Meta Quest 3 review. We'll dive into the improvements and the hurdles of this super cool VR headset.

What is Meta Quest 3?

The Meta Quest 3 is the latest virtual reality headset from Meta (formerly Facebook) and is available now. This review delves into the improvements that Quest 3 brings over its predecessor, Quest 2. With six upgraded outward-facing cameras, it can show you the real world in full color, track your hand movements more accurately, and place digital objects in your surroundings. This concept is called mixed reality (MR).

What innovations do the latest headset from Meta have to offer?

Quest 3 has a lot of great features, like better object recognition, better hand tracking, and better visuals with a bigger field of view. Nonetheless, it is not flawless. One of the standout features of the Quest 3 is its mixed reality capabilities. It can show you your real surroundings in full color, and this opens up exciting possibilities for blending the real world with digital fun. Unfortunately, the images you see from the cameras perspective, called "see-through" still have a bit of blur, especially in poorer lighting conditions. However, thanks to two RGB cameras located in the place of the headset's "eyes", the sense of stereovision and depth of the real world is excellent. This really encourages immersion in extended reality. It particularly excels when interacting with real-world objects. When trying to catch a real object, you don't have to focus on the difference between what you see and where your hand actually is. It was really nice to finally see that everything matches.

The operating system and user interface aren't as modern and organized as we'd like, but real-time environment mapping and suggesting how the guardian should be positioned are certainly very nice improvements. Quest 3 is more expensive than Quest 2.

The Quest 3 is technically more powerful. It's got a beefier brain inside, featuring the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip with 8 GB of RAM. This means apps load quicker and have a more enjoyable experience. This power has already been used by some app developers to create visually stunning experiences.

The Quest 3 is smaller and fits better, making it more comfy for longer use than it’s predecesor. Its new elastic strap design keeps it more securely on your head.?

However, for workouts and long-term use, the additional elite strap seems to be a much-needed addition. The new face plate fabric feels nicer, but in my opinion, a silicone facial interface is still something you would like to get too.? The smaller touch controllers, now called Touch Plus, are more precise and provide better haptic feedback. It takes a while to get used to the fact that they don't have those big rings anymore, but ultimately, it gives your hands a lot of freedom when operating close to each other. Another thing is related to the lack of tracking cameras that were located on the top of the Quest 2 headset. I was afraid that tracking would be really easy to lose when you raised your hands up over your head. Surprisingly, the internal IMU of the controllers works quite well. Additionally, a scenario where you have your hands over your head for a longer period of time is very uncommon. So, in the end, this is not an issue at all.

Is it worth investing in Meta Quest 3?

In this review, I find that while the Quest 3 has improved hardware, it is more evolution than revolution. The metaverse and mixed reality applications are exciting, but haven't fully taken off yet. So, there are questions about where the Quest 3 fits into the ever-changing world of digital reality.

In short, the Meta Quest 3 is a step forward in the world of virtual and mixed reality, offering impressive upgrades. However, its success depends on the industry's ability to define who it's for and how it can be used in the real world. As technology continues to progress, the Quest 3 provides us with a glimpse of a future where the realities and virtual worlds merge, despite the ongoing obstacles.?
