Snapchat showing off the new ChatGPT integration on their app.?
In late October 2022, “ChatGPT” overtook “metaverse” on Google according to data from Trends. And there has been no looking back. With so many new features being rolled out by OpenAi and its competitors every week, the buzz is expected to continue for months. Meanwhile, searches for metaverse has plateaued.
One interesting piece that we picked up amidst all the din around AI and LLMs was that these new technologies could fill out many of the missing components that are still needed to complete the puzzle that is the metaverse. The question that folks on MIT Tech Review asked is - could AI be the vital cog in creating a viable, working metaverse? That provocation ended there, we could not find any more details on how AI could power a future AR/VR world. So we thought why not ask the “all-knowing” ChatGPT this question? Sure enough, the platform provided some clues while stating that it is not sure if AI and LLMs on their own could create a metaverse-like technology.?

Here are some takeaways we found interesting
Generating human-like dialogue for virtual characters in the metaverse. Many of us, users of ChatGPT engage on the platform in a very human-like manner. The way that ChatGPT responds to queries makes us want to ask questions as if we are talking to another person. As more and more people use these platforms, the AI models will start to mature and these human-like interactions will continue to get better and better. It's only a matter of time before some companies working on building the metaverse will use newly trained AI models to build interaction models that can make virtual characters engage with others in familiar ways.
Andrej Karpathy Director of AI at Tesla spoke eloquently about using generative AI models in his work at the company. In his recent tweet about using Github’s copilot, Andrej said that he generates as much as 80% of code using copilot. Here is a man who was tasked with building computer vision for future self-driving cars. In an interview with Lex Freidman Andrej told us that a lot of the code behind his program was done using AI. In fact, during the demo of GPT4 there was a small segment that showed how the tool could transform a pencil sketch into a website in a matter of seconds. Could the next generation of AR/VR models be created using code created in generative AI?
Generating procedural content in the metaverse. If the metaverse has to grow to the scale and complexity of the internet a lot of content within the virtual expanse will have to be built using AI. Procedural content in video games is created on the fly using generative techniques that have been written into the code. Such techniques have been used in the video game industry as early as the 1970s. With the coming of new technologies, we are beginning to see more realistic, intelligent spaces being created by machines and code.
Better, more human-like avatars and bots. Talking to a bot can be frustrating. These one-dimensional pieces of computer code were supposed to revolutionise human-computer interactions, but alas. Interacting with ChatGPT however, is radical. One of the reasons for the platform to become so popular, so quickly is how human-like the interactions are. Could the models built on ChatGPT and other such platforms spawn new kinds of human-machine interactions and engagement?
Blockchain-led security and decentralised economies. Not so much a feature of LLMs but supported by AI, could the much-hyped (like the metaverse) protocols like blockchain find a new lease of life for the future metaverse?
Experts predict that Microsoft Azure's cloud computing platform could gain an advantage over its competition because ChatGPT and Bing search is running on the platform. While the future of cloud computing is far from clear, many of the optimisations that are being put in place to run LLMs with their huge data capacities could bring new learnings to cloud providers who could then go on to build scale virtual universes.???
Running AI-powered LLMs is a completely different stream of work when compared to building fantasy virtual worlds where humans live and engage with each other. The metaverse will need to bring people who are artists, 3D modellers, interaction specialists, machine-human relationship experts, storytellers and more. As more and more of our lives get influenced by AI and its tools, the metaverse could too.
Like Snapchat, we asked ChatGpt to write a haiku: from the metaverse to AI. Here it goes.
Silicon and code,
AI learns and evolves fast,
Metaverse awakes.
