Messy desk = messy mind... or does it?!

So let's talk working spaces - or desks as we all know them! I remember years ago having my boss walk over to my desk covered in notebooks, newspapers, post it notes and my trusty globe (#travelpr - nothing worse than a journo calling you about a destination and you not knowing 100% where it is!) and claiming "Messy desk equals a messy mind!"
"Empty desk..." I joked back looking towards his baron desk with only a laptop, expensive notebook and Mont Blanc pen upon it. However, now I think about it he might have a point... I will never be someone who relishes a clear desk policy but since working from home I have found that having a 'capsule desk set up' is a much more productive way of working. This includes laptop, A4 notebook, pen, chargers, phone and ruler. I can literally get all of this in my handbag, granted my kids call it my 'Mary Poppins bag' but it shows that changing our way of working has cut down on all the stuff! Plus I am pretty sure the amount of printer paper and ink cartridges used has decreased as no one wants to print documents at home when they can read it on the screen for free.
What are your desks looking like now? Do you have staple 'must haves' for your working day and how has this changed? Am I missing a trick?
