The Message You Need To Hear To Do Incredible Things

What if you’ve always had the power to do something incredible?

There’s a ton of messages out there. There are messages on your phone, there are messages in your head, there are messages from friends and there are those cryptic messages you get from a good mentor.

Messages are great. But how many of those messages lead to anything notable? How many of those messages take you someplace you’ve never been before but always dreamed of visiting?

By my own calculations, probably only a few.

I’ve gone back over 5 years of blog posts and interviews I’ve done to work out what the messages are that you need to hear, to do incredible things.

Here’s what you need to hear:

It’s not about you

Call it ego. Call it an obsession with being an influencer. Call it overconfidence. Call it cockiness. It’s all just a brilliant way of saying it’s not about you.

If all you do is flaunt yourself, you’ll never do incredible things.

An obsession with yourself is the enemy of doing incredible things.

The moment you wake the hell up and do something for someone else other than yourself and quit talking yourself up, that’s the moment that will lead to you doing something remarkable.

Don’t tell us how good you are. Show us how we can be the best version of ourselves instead and park the ego somewhere else.

People listen when it’s not about you.

Really caring works

People come back when you care about them. Not 10-second care factor but truly caring.

• Answer that email
• Make that Skype call
• Buy the person getting a redundancy lunch
• Care for people that no one cares about

Try caring for someone other than yourself and see what it feels like. Take your experience and knowledge and use it to care for someone.

You can care for customers. 

You can care for family.

You can care for your fellow colleagues at work.

Pick someone, show them you care and expect nothing. This one simple act leads to people wanting to spend more time with you. These people build a relationship with you and they end up becoming your early fans. These early fans then develop into raving fans. Raving fans then spread your message. And bingo bango, you will end up doing incredible things.

It’s start with caring for one person — just one.

Do something you love

Incredible things need a sprinkle of love. As Elon Musk said, “Love makes the world go round.”

Take something you love and work on it. Not once a week or once a year: every, single, freaking, day you’re alive. Do it. Do it again. And then go Nike on everyone’s ass and Just Do It Again.

You’ll never do anything that carries the label of incredible unless it’s something you love or have grown to love. I used to hate writing but have grown to love it.

Not every pursuit of creativity starts out as a love affair or an obsession. You can grow to love something and then do incredible things from there.

Scare the pants off yourself

“Walk the streets as if you’re naked with your genitals in full view”

That’s what it feels like when I write. People read my stuff at work and some days I feel as though they’re glancing at me and I’m scared shitless what they might be thinking. Being raw and vulnerable, to someone like me, is freaking scary and it makes me feel naked.

Naked is just another way of saying do something that is uncomfortable, outlandish, a little weird, different, crazy and even stupid.

Scare yourself and see what you can come up with. You’ll be surprised how your fears can turn into growth that makes you leave a trail behind you instead of following someone else’s path.

Take your pants, pull them off, strip down and get to know what it feels like to be naked. From there, you can do cool shit.

And do one thing

Not ten. Not 100. One thing.

Read one book and then get started. 

Choose one podcast and then get to work. 

Find one way to do incredible things, not several.

When you choose one, you say yes to focus and no to overthinking and overwhelm. Choose one pursuit, one platform, one version of yourself and most of all: choose one message.

Okay, what’s going to trigger all of this?

If there was ever one thing that could trigger all of what I’ve just spoken about, it’s this: a shift in thinking.

All it takes is for you to think differently.

Incredible things come from thinking differently. It doesn’t have to be a radical change in thinking. It could just be a slightly different way of thinking from how you thought yesterday.

Our mind can lead us to the most incredible experiences and achievements when we break the pattern and start having some different thoughts.

A simple thought that works is:

What if I’ve always had the power to do something incredible?

That one thought can lead you to thoughts you’ve never had before. Those thoughts can turn into dreams you’ve never dreamt before. And those dreams can lead to actions and beliefs about your life that you’ve never had.

One thought.

You’ve always had the power to do incredible things. All of us have that power it’s just been sleeping inside of us.
