Message from the Superintendent October 6, 2023

Dear Fayette County Public Schools Families, Students, and Staff,

?I will ?be visiting each school to speak with parents regarding the upcoming School Letter Grade Assignment and the Federal Desegregation Court Case. Please make plans to attend the meeting at your child’s school. Informational Session dates and?times are below. Your presence matters!

Last week I discussed our Networking Systems and Criminal Justice programs offered at our College, Career, and Technical Education center. This week I will share more about other important programs that we offer to our students. Students taking CTE courses are able to take certain certification tests, such as OSHA10, because those safety skills are embedded in all CTE courses. Additionally, many Level 1 (ninth grade) students through Level 4 students can enroll in Dual Enrollment with TCAT Jackson. We are proud to provide our students with a jumpstart on future career paths.

The Advanced Manufacturing: Welding program of study is designed to prepare students for a lucrative career after graduation. TCAT Jackson Dual Enrollment Welding instructor Steven Grantham actively encourages students to complete projects and empowers them to take a hands-on approach to learning to foster independence in students and help them realize their full potential. Employers in manufacturing and fabrication of many different varieties are always looking for well-trained workers committed to their craft. Welding instruction will help our students launch an in-demand, high-paying career with extensive job opportunities and the gratification of taking pride in their craftsmanship.

Our Architecture & Construction: Mechanical, Engineering, & Plumbing MEP Systems and Residential & Commercial Construction courses are taught by Steve Lenti. These courses provide a tremendous opportunity due to their Dual Enrollment status through TCAT Jackson. The skills gleaned from our Mechanical, Engineering, & Plumbing MEP Systems program provides students with the specialized skills and concepts required for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC careers used in the field of Construction.? In the Residential & Commercial Construction program of study, students prepare for a career in construction by developing an in-depth understanding of the different phases of a construction project from start to finish. Students learn to perform masonry work, frame roofs, install shingles on roofs, apply exterior finishes, and install proper piping for plumbing systems safely. Residential & Commercial Construction students learn principles of the construction industry and how to manage a construction project. These programs prepare students to further their education or go directly into a well-paying job in the workforce right out of high school.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is another growing program of study offered at CCTE and our junior high schools. Junior high students can begin their selected program of study, which will carry over to high school, at the middle school level. Fayette-Ware STEM instructor Clarissa Arnold emphasizes innovation, problem-solving, communication, creativity, teamwork, and critical thinking, skills that will benefit students regardless of what career they pursue after high school. STEM engages and motivates students through hands-on, real-world learning activities and prepares students for well-paying jobs and successful futures. Through the STEM program of study, students receive critical academic, technical, and employability skills that will prepare them for careers in any field they choose.

I hope that you have a safe and restful Fall Break next week. I look forward to seeing our students and staff back when classes resume on October 16.?

It is important that we do our best to keep students healthy and in school. We can help avoid the spread of sickness in our schools by staying home when sick. Attendance matters!

Dr. Versie R. Hamlett
