A message from the future you
If you are reading this, you are probably uncertain about your future in the oil & gas industry. You are not alone with this feeling since more than 75% of oil & gas employees report feeling less secure in their jobs compared to a year ago and would consider switching to another line of work in the next few years.?
?That is why, the number of oil & gas professionals looking for a job is increasing at an alarming rate, although oil & gas production has increased recently due to the looming energy crisis and an increase in market prices.
?There is one problem though which needs to be addressed here. The oil & gas job market has changed significantly, and recruiters now also look for quite different skills. That is why if you want to find a new job in the industry, you should also change and adapt your CV to highlight skills which are in high demand.
When looking for a job you are competing for limited opportunities. With the number of traditional jobs decreasing, the current job market is over-saturated, and it will become increasingly difficult to find a suitable occupation.
To successfully compete with others and add value to any future employer you will need to develop new skills that are now in high demand and are vital for the future. This modern skillset will set you apart from the competition and will be your USP (unique selling point).
Trust me, being just a “geologist” is not enough anymore. Over the last 10 years the global number of traditional job positions for a “geologist” decreased by 50%.?Unfortunately, this trend will rather unlikely improve in the future.
How to know which skillset is in high demand?
The new skillsets in high demand are those related to current trends in the industry:
This is your chance to cross-skill and re-skill and regain your job security. Organisations are actively seeking professionals to fill the capability gaps related to these three trends mentioned above. But these organisations are not seeking just specialists in these areas. They are seeking specialists with the skillset from the oil & gas industry (the mentioned proverbial “geologist”) WITH a new skill related to the current trends in the industry (digital transformation, energy transition, agile revolution).
So it would look like this:
"traditional oil & gas occupation + new skillset related to the current trends"
For the purpose of this newsletter please insert your traditional oil & gas job title in every place I mention the proverbial “geologist” and you will understand what I mean. ?
Digital transformation is happening and there is a shortage of digitally savvy professionals in the industry. Because historically the oil & gas industry failed to attract digital talent, the lack of such skills might be the main threat to their business continuity.?
Complicating matters, most companies have enormous technical debt embedded in their legacy technologies that are difficult to change. You can only resolve these issues with people who have technological depth and breadth (that means YOU), and the ability to work hand-in-hand with the business.?
The unfortunate reality is that at many companies today, most data is not up to basic standards, and the rigours of transformation require much better data quality and analytics. Transformation involves understanding new types of unstructured data, massive quantities of external data, leveraging proprietary data, and integrating everything whilst also shedding enormous quantities of unused data. Professionals (YOU) with extensive digital and data managements skills will be needed.?
Digital transformation of the oil and gas industry requires skills such as:
So, if these areas interest you, keep developing them, attend courses and training and your position on the job market will significantly improve once you can add these skills to your CV alongside your traditional industry skillset.
I am not talking about changing your career from a proverbial “geologist” to a DevOps specialist. I am saying that a “geologist” with DevOps skills will be much likely to find a new job than just DevOps specialist or just “geologist”.
The world is in the midst of a massive energy transformation that is uniquely challenging — yet full of opportunities for YOU.

Any technical and engineering skillset that helps organisations to focus on new ways of power generation from clean energy sources like hydropower, bioenergy, offshore wind, onshore wind, green hydrogen, and solar is currently widely sought and in high demand on the job market.
?At the same time leaner (meaning cheaper) and more efficient (meaning carbon emission efficient) oil & gas operations are also a main focus of organisations. Hence any skills related to optimisation and innovation of projects and operations will be required.??
?Energy transition of the oil & gas industry requires skills such as:
Developing additional skills like obtaining a PMI certification is not extremely expensive, and relatively fast, but adds to a significant boost to your CV which makes you stand out among your competition. You would also bring a totally different value to your future employer.
So again, a “geologist” with PMI certification and experience of managing complex projects will be more likely to find a new job than just a “geologist” or a project manager from outside of oil & gas with no industry experience.
Agility is neither?a new concept nor one exclusive to the oil & gas industry. Done right, various Agile frameworks help working across functions, with less hierarchy, and focus on real business problems. Agility enables flexibility and faster decision making and is a game changer for oil and gas organisations in productivity increase, cost reduction, quality improvement, speed, and better employee experience. And this is where YOU and your new Agile skills can make a difference.
?Organisations have started to implement various Agile frameworks but the most common are: Kanban, Scrum and Lean or modifications of these. Hence, investing in development of Agile skills mentioned below will create the best return (ROI) for you and will secure your future occupation.?
You can look at the recruitment profile of any oil & gas operator and see a constant demand for people with these skills to fill jobs in these niche areas.
Agile revolution of the oil & gas industry requires skills such as:
I am a geologist, a project manager (waterfall methodology) and a scrum master (Scrum framework). I have worked as a management consultant in communication and change management. Although I already had two MScs, I decided to do an MBA and am now starting my PhD in geopolitics.
How many geologists (with a technical background and real oil & gas industry experience) who also have an MBA do you know? I know only 5 people like me among 100s I know in my network. I am not boasting about my achievements here. I am pointing out that this is my unique selling point (USP) on the job market and this is what allows me to stand out among my competition. And this is what you should do as well – create your unique profile and present yourself differently with a newly acquired set of skills. You can choose whatever you like but cross-skilling (the process of developing new skills that apply across different functions) is the best thing you can do now.
Again, I am not saying you need to have 4 diplomas and such a wide range of interests like me. I am saying that being just a “geologist” will not likely be a safe choice for you and will significantly limit your choices in the future.
Think about it.
