A Message from FasterCures Executive Director Esther Krofah
FasterCures
Working to build a health system that is effective, efficient, & driven by a clear vision: patient needs above all else.
Dear Colleagues,
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Orphan Drug Act, which stimulated drug development for rare diseases. Since the law’s passage, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued more than 1,100 orphan-designated approvals. Yet, over 95 percent of the more than 10,000 rare diseases still have no FDA-approved treatment. During Rare Disease Week activities at the FDA and National Institutes of Health (NIH) and on Capitol Hill, FasterCures joined rare-disease community members from across the country to raise awareness and advocate for opportunities to build upon our strong foundation. To learn more about the current landscape and issues, view a recording of the Rare Disease Congressional Caucus Briefing that I moderated on strengthening the novel therapy development ecosystem for rare diseases.
As you know, FasterCures is celebrating our anniversary and the accomplishments our community has achieved for two decades to ensure that transformative and lifesaving science delivers better treatments to the people who need them. For three decades, our founder Michael Milken has been working to speed up biomedical innovation and advance public health initiatives. Of note, this week he released his book, Faster Cures: Accelerating the Future of Health, in which he describes the challenges overcome, progress made, lessons learned, and prospects for a healthier future.
