Ok, so...the grind is still real.
I've been on a new job lookout for some time now. And I keep seeing and hearing stories about job search burnout (Yes, it's a thing now!). Applications being sent in hundreds, time spent on-line searching for sweet job openings equals to dozens of hours of hours. All all this with little to no result.
So, being a data-driven Marketing professional with over 19 years of experience working with the biggest brands in the industry (Hi guys! I'm still here, open for new endeavors!) I decided to do a little and fun exercise for you.
I wanted to understand a few things:
So, my little math and statistics lovers, here is what I came up with. Don't mean to discourage anyone from searching jobs, ok? It's just for fun ) Here we go:
Let's assume that you apply for at least 100 roles in a month, you get 2-3 interview calls the next month, the chance of successfully landing a job is approximately 5% (I made a boring calculation of multi factors, so trust me, it's between 5-4%)
To determine the expected time to get hired and the number of applications needed, we can break down the task as follows:
Given Data:
Step 1: Calculate Probability of Getting an Interview per Application
P Interview = I/N = 2.5/100 = 0.025 (2,5 % probability to get a phone screening interview)

Step 2: Calculate Number of Interviews Needed to Get One Job Offer
1/P Job = 1/0.05 = 20 (20 interviews are needed to land a job with 5% success rate)
Step 3: The Fun Part )
Now, we know that to get one job offer, we need approximately 20 interviews. We get about 2.5 interviews per month with 100 applications.
20/2.5 = 8 Months?
100×8=800 Applications
This lovely simple exercise leads us to the following exciting Conclusion:
Time it takes to get hired: Approximately 8 months
Number of applications needed: Approximately 800 applications
Let me know where you stand with your 800 applications?
Feel free to repost, share, show love and support to your fellow job searchers! Because this is exceptional.

8 个月Great sharing and it is very important for job searching to have a useful tool! F1 Hire—this chrome extension works in LinkedIn, Indeed, google job, handshakes and Glassdoor, it looks into the job descriptions, and saves the job seeker's time. It does a great job in profile matching and sponsorship extraction. Highly recommended.
