Mersey Gateway
As the Mersey Gateway nears completion the excitement and terror of a huge increase in traffic past your beloved home is unsettling. I led the 'Road to Ruin' campaign group for 3 years - to re-design the proposed road plans for the Town of Runcorn to allow traffic to flow around the centre and not through it. Same bridge, same location, however, a change from using the Central Expressway instead splitting the traffic and sending it towards Daresbury/Warrington M56 (for Manchester bound traffic) and the Weston Expressway M56 (for North Wales/Chester bound traffic).
I featured on Granada Reports twice, stood for 2 days at the Public Inquiry at the Stobart Stadium Widnes, helped produce a website, videos and many articles in news papers from the Liverpool Echo, to the Chester Chronicle, Runcorn & Widnes Weekly News & World Newspapers.
Though we never won our case at the Public Inquiry for all traffic to be diverted, the design was changed to include feeder roads allowing some traffic to be channelled off towards Daresbury & Weston/North Wales - with flowing none stop slip roads & increased signage to provide directional advice. Seeing our input built into a bridge that will stand the test of time makes me proud that I have helped (in a small way) towards the design of the largest current bridge construction in Europe costing £1.5billion total. Anyone interested can read the full publication submitted to the Public Inquiry here.
