Merit Olthoff on 'Connection' for International Women’s Day 2024
What does International Women’s Day mean to you?
Celebrating female power and the long way we have come but also a reminder that a lot needs to be done still.
This year, the theme of IWD is #InspiringInclusion. At Freshfields we are focusing on the theme of ‘Connection’ - how important is IWD to you and how do we ensure that the meaningful connections we build through our IWD events and initiatives are maintained?
IWD is wonderful reminder to everyone out there that gender equality at work, at home and in society is a must. We are not there yet.
Building and maintaining relationships is a natural female skill, and we should be much more bullish to leverage our many connections and relationships to the benefit of our female community.
How do you build connections with colleagues and clients?
Many of my mentors have been strong, independent female leaders and thinkers. They taught me how to think outside the box and how to enjoy stepping outside my comfort zone while keeping a clear mind. I am grateful for these connections, and I tap into them whenever needed. One should never shy away from asking for advice.
How can we create more opportunities for women to connect and collaborate on projects and initiatives?
Creating opportunities and encouraging women to connect happens in the day-to-day. It’s hard work and requires self-awareness, testing whether you have done everything you can to bring people together and create opportunities by leading from behind.
