A Merging Galaxy Pair Cavort Image Captured By The James Webb Space Telescope
This image was taken by the James Webb Space Telescope, a global mission led by NASA alongside its partners the CSA and the ESA (European Space Agency) (Canadian Space Agency). During a visit to NASA Headquarters in Washington on Nov. 30, Vice President Kamala Harris and French President Emmanuel Macron got the first look at this new James Webb Space Telescope image of a pair of galaxies known to astronomers as II ZW 96. A?fresh composite image of the Pillars of Creation?from Webb was also previewed by Vice President Harris and President Macron.
How did the James Webb Space Telescope describe the image?
II ZW 96 is a star that is 500 million light-years away from Earth and is located near the celestial equator in the constellation Delphinus. The image contains a variety of background galaxies in addition to the ferocious swirl of the merging galaxies.
