7 个月I first started my apprenticeship with W&T Avery in Smethwick, West Midlands in 1979 until 1984. During that time GEC took over and the firm became GEC Avery. I remember it staying that way for many years afterwards. I owe a lot to the people there who took the time to train us - at any one time there were 100 apprentices out of 2,000 employees on the grounds covering 26 acres of manufacturing processes, including a large machine shop, assembly areas, electronic assembly and test, design and production control. Another site at Tamebridge, Walsall incorporated casting and strain gauge bonding onto transducers for their award winning 1750, 1760 and Commander electronic scales. There was also one of the largest deadweight testing machines in the UK. Avery also manufactured testing machines for tensile tests, which was just winding down around 1980. Avery also housed its own museum, with stone weights, early personnel weighing machines and steelyards.
