Mercury: From Control(ler) to Collaboration

Mercury: From Control(ler) to Collaboration

A full version of this article is in The Access Control Executive Brief 92, which went out to members in written, video, and audio formats simultaneously with this post. The access control industry is witnessing a transformative shift. It is moving beyond traditional security of keeping bad people out, locking, and unlocking to become a driver of operational efficiency and revenue generation. At MercTech, Mercury Security unveiled something that could accelerate the transformation of our industry: an App Store for their controllers.

Think 苹果 App Store, but for access control. Third-party developers will soon be able to create and deploy custom applications directly on Mercury boards through a dedicated store, launching at ISC West. This isn't just about Mercury or their OEM partners – it's about enabling an entire ecosystem of innovators to enhance board functionality beyond traditional Physical Access Control Systems (PACS).

This strategic evolution mirrors the successful paths of mainstream players like Apple, IBM, Tesla, and Microsoft Xbox, who all leveraged the power of app ecosystems to drive innovation. The benefits ripple throughout the industry:

  • OEMs gain enhanced capabilities and new market opportunities
  • Technology partners can integrate once to reach 25+ OEM partners
  • End users receive more flexible, future-proof solutions
  • Mercury expands its offering while fostering innovation

While maintaining the security and safety standards crucial to our industry, Mercury wants to transform from a hardware provider into an enablement platform.?

This development supports my conviction that we're looking at a $100B industry. Now is the time to explore the art of the possible.

I completely agree! The future of access control is bright. The arrival of platforms that allow for custom applications opens up a world of opportunities. As manufacturers, we have the chance to innovate and transform the industry. Now is the time to move forward and lead this change!

Happy to see the industry go more open standard. Manufacturers do not need to be everything, to everyone. Do what you do best, and partner with other technologies to fill the gaps.
