It’s been a year since I posted about the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport F1 Team’s success using Agile, "Mercedes F1 breed extreme success through Agile." And guess what? They’ve done it again. Winning a 7th consecutive World Championship. And what a year to maintain this dominance.
The Mercedes team could have been forgiven for dropping the ball (or wheel) this year but if anything, their dominance over rivals in individual races and across the season seems to have increased. When Team Principal, Toto Wolff, talks about "A relentless push for better” this provides an insight into the machinations of the team. Further, if you look deeper there are many clues of Agile type practices that point to how such extreme success has been achieved. These include:
- A complete team effort. Drivers, Engine, Aero teams etc etc. Both Wolff and lead driver, Lewis Hamilton, frequently refer to this. Win or Lose.
- Open and frequent assessment of the reasons behind success and failure to ensure continued improvement. A “No blame culture” says Wolff.
- Empowerment, accountability and trust in all team members. “Empowering people to be the best they can be.” - Wolff.
- Encouragement to try new methods, process and technologies. Knowing that many will fail. Wolff said on BBC Radio this week “I believe the days we fail are the days we learn the most.”
- The ability to win 7 Wold Championships despite continuous change in the form of regulations, team members and a global pandemic.
“I believe the days we fail are the days we learn the most.” Toto Wolff.
So what does 2021 hold for this team? It’s hard to see how any team will prevent them from winning an 8th or even 9th consecutive World Championship. Major regulation changes in 2022 will test their agility. However so far they have proven themselves truly capable of adapting and overcoming these.
