MEP warns: REACH revision delay will hurt businesses

Martin Hojsik, a European Parliament vice president, has expressed concerns about the potential delay in the revision of the REACH regulation. He argues that such a delay, which many predict due to the new European Commission mandate, would have negative consequences for the chemicals industry. The uncertainty created by a prolonged revision process could significantly impact businesses.

Despite the challenges faced by the chemicals industry, the European Commission remains committed to revising REACH. Climate action commissioner Wopke Hoekstra confirmed this during a meeting of environment ministers. Hojsik, while acknowledging the potential for a "European compromise," emphasized the importance of finalizing the revision to provide clarity and certainty for the industry.

To address the immediate concerns, Hojsik suggested prioritizing the establishment of a basic regulation for the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and the adoption of the "one substance, one assessment" package. Additionally, the Commission is expected to introduce a Clean Industry Deal and a chemicals industry package to support industry competitiveness and transition to safer and sustainable chemicals.

Paul Speight, head of the safe and sustainable chemicals unit at the Commission's DG Environment, highlighted the upcoming confirmation hearings of Commissioners-designate as a crucial step in determining the direction of chemicals policy. He indicated that the Clean Industry Deal would provide a framework for the chemicals industry package, aiming to simplify legislation, address PFAS restrictions, and rebalance the regulatory approach.

Speight acknowledged the industry's frustration with delays but assured that the Commission is aware of the urgency and committed to transparency and progress on the to-do list.
