Mentorship:the comfort factor

I had a big reality check on the issue of mentoring a few days back.I have written extensively on the topic of professional and personal mentoring.

https://loneranger64.blogspot.com/2021/09/what-is-mentoring.html

The reality check was provided in a spirited exchange with a fellow professional..young and dynamic Monika Bishnoi who had the courage to question my ultra disciplined ''?omrades in combat''attitude towards learning law specially tax litigation. She said that this attitude of mine wont work with most of the mentees ,specially the gennext people.

The train of thought which set in thereafter persuaded me of one proposition: the fourth angle of the mentorship triangle : the comfort factor.Till that point I thought the COMPLETE picture had three angles : trust, competence and commitment.

The 'softer'apprach of compassion, understanding ,forgiving I felt(and still do-ashamed to admit!!!)were alien to the combat elite law commando I thought I would create.

I admit ,though that mutual compatibility is a factor in any relationship- if the combat commando approach I have is to find fruition,I have to have that mindset in my mentee too-no wonder ,my Arjuna eludes me.

The generic point of this post though stands made: till there is a sense of ease between the mentor and the mentee,a sense of clarity and comprehension as to what is trying to be achieved and in which way,the result shall be disappointing.

So if you are a mentee looking for a mentor, try the compatibilty test first.See if you are naturally comfortable with each other.Only then , attempt the mentee role. The level of expertise and skill set the mentor possesses, the quality of communication, command over language, the experience...all come thereafter. It has to be the EASE FACTOR first.

As for me ,Ms.Monika ,I must grudgingly admit, wins in her diagnosis. Some Dronacharyas must die with their skillset not taught. So be it.
