Mentorship : 270 degrees

Mentorship : 270 degrees

The word MENTORSHIP has made from the word "MENTOR" means GURU (not the movie GURU :P). The thing about Mentorship is that it covers your blind spots. Each one of us can only see 270 degrees and rest 90 degree is always a blind spot which we want someone to cover. That's what mentorship does. It's like walking on a mine field. If you can follow the footsteps of someone (your mentor) who has already walked on mine field, it can help you to prevent yourselves from blowing up at certain level.

Most people have spiritual mentors, financial mentors, mentors at work and so on. But the problem is sometime their lives themselves are out of balance. Because successful life is a balanced life in different areas - like health, finance, relationships, personal development, spiritual etc. Sometime, they are very passionate about one area in which they are good at and put all their energy there and as a result, it affects other areas of life and create an imbalance.

Now the question come HOW TO CHOOSE A RIGHT MENTOR?

When choosing a mentor, it is important to BEGIN WITH END IN THE MIND (Habit 2 of '7 Habits of Highly Effective People'). First thing we need to do is to ask ourselves "What would be a dream life for me 5-10 years down the line?" And create a vision for yourself in all the areas. And then see, Who is there around you whose package of life align with yours and you would like to have? Who is there around you who can think your "well being" in all the areas and not just single one?

Fortunately, I was able to find a mentor whose life was in balance in all fronts - wealthy on money side, conscious of health & habits, great relationships at home and with business associates, good influencer. Basically, they had fruit on the tree and were living the life that I was dreaming of. That's an appropriate choice of mentor. Sometime, we get confuse between Mentor and Coach. Coach is someone who can coach us certain skills in certain areas of life. A football coach will be worthy of following on the field but might not be worthy of following off the field. And that differentiation is very important.

But what if you find a mentor but they are not in physical reach for whatsoever reason. Chase them, become worthy of their mentorship & their time and earn it. It’s a worthwhile chase for a great life. The joys of being mentored by someone and the feeling of security knowing that someone like that is looking out for you itself is priceless and its worth it.
