Mentoring Wisdom
January has been proclaimed as #NationalMentoringMonth. What a great opportunity to share some mentoring wisdom. Excited to hear your tips on mentoring and to get us started these are three mentoring pearls I love:
We're getting into mentor hunting mode. - Christine Liu
Christine Liu posted a quick hit video on how to find a mentor. Know your goal. This wisdom is an often overlooked foundational step. The lack of upfront investment is really apparent when I ask a person requesting mentorship - why me as a mentor? I often get a blank stare, generic response or a "That is a good question, let me get back to you." None of these inspire me to say - Yes. However, a well thought out response motivates me to consider investing my time with a mentee. Prepare by getting into "mentor hunting mode" before you reach out with an mentorship ask.

Your inner mentor is a North Star that can serve as your compass. - Tara Mohr
Tara Mohr recently posted questions to ask yourself. While I am certainly good at being my own critic, I love the wisdom Tara shares to be your own "inner mentor". Life gives us so many chances to learn, but do we take the time reflect on these lessons? As I work to practice being my own mentor, I am grateful for this question Tara suggests in her post: "What is this situation calling forth in me?" Learn from your own wisdom by taking the time to visit with yourself as a mentor.
As individuals we define mentoring really differently. - Dr. Kimberly Griffin
Dr. Kimberly Griffin shares her views on mentorship dynamics with examples from her favorite television shows in this TEDx talk. As a mentor, how do I define mentoring? Does my definition match the expectations of my mentee? This is a wonderful way to explore if a potential mentoring relationship is a match. My mentoring style tends to be quick hit advice with a problem solving frame. While I have talked about my communication style and my leadership style, I have never before reflected on my mentoring style. I'm excited for this mentoring wisdom from Dr. Griffin. Define your mentoring style and check in with your mentees on if it is a fit.
Now it's your turn. What wisdom have you discovered on mentoring?

2 年Thanks for sharing Sharon and I hope things are going well for you. Mentoring is such a powerful approach, I certainly had personal benefits from mentoring in my career. My reflection now is combining Mentoring with Non-Directive Coaching leads to sustained high performance as well as personal well-being. Take care. Shaun
Sharon, Absolutely love your newsletter. Thank you for sharing the mentoring pearls and your wisdom. I have learned a lot from you :-) In my org, we are going big on mentorship. In 2021, we set the audacious goal with 75% of FLM has a mentor. It was absolutely a stretch goal. Through many mentor/mentee mapping, we are very proud we made it. 76% of the FLMs who want to have a mentor got a mentor now. Inspired by your newsletter, I also did a LinkedIn posting :-) Thank you! ?
