Mentoring vs. Coaching

As an executive coach cutting edge research on even better advancing leadership fascinates me. Based on research and hundreds of interviews, this book is a treasure chest, packed with best practices and candid revelations of the dark side of mentoring as well.

The most striking revelations included:

  • Employees who actively engaged in mentoring are 5 times more likely to a pay raise and retention rates are nearly 50% higher.
  • Based on the research of the authors, "we do not recommend looking to your immediate line manager as a mentor."
  • The person receiving mentoring should capture their key learning points and commitments as bullet points and share with their mentor by 48 hours after their conversation
  • Six different kinds of mentoring, including traditional-hierarchial to team to reverse mentoring. How to choose what is best for you.
  • Measuring mentoring results...before and after
  • When to STOP a mentoring relationship
  • Ten asynchornous ways to make mentoring communication more fluid and accelerate progress
  • The three most frequent traps which hinder mentoring success and how to avoid them
  • MY FAVORITE A comprehensive, single page guide to plan your best mentoring ever....includes before, during and after insights and tips

Thank you to my 100Coaches friend Ruth Gotian, Ed.D., M.S. from New York who teamed up with Brit Andy Lopata to co-create this comprehensively researched guide to even better helping others discover and become their best selves.

Curious if anyone else also enjoys the "mash up" nature of this mix of American and British English?

I love the best practice of 48-hour bullet points - I'm going to experiment with inviting my coaching clients to do that as well. Good for them, and useful for me too.

Hi Bill, on the point of who to ask to be your mentor, I do agree with your statement. My best mentor was 20 years ago: the VP EMEA at #Kraton. He was not my line manager
