Mentoring Moment: Stop Waiting To Be Called Upon

Mentoring Moment: Stop Waiting To Be Called Upon

Mentorship is simply learning from someone else’s experiences.

The intention of this newsletter is to put you in the mentor seat—helping you find everyday mentoring moments around you. But once a month, I want to give you a break and step into the seat myself, sharing something from my own experience that may be the mentorship you or someone you know needs to hear.

If this message resonates with you, pick it up and use it. Let it be the push, the encouragement, or the reminder you need today—or pass it on to someone who does.

A few summers ago, my niece picked this out over the nearby princess costumes at a local garage sale. She refused to take it off all summer.

(It’s the footwear that gets me! ???)

It astonishes me when I think of the time I lost waiting to be called upon.

  • As a student — sitting in the classroom, knowing the answer but terrified to raise my hand.
  • As a friend — waiting to play the game, usually last to be chosen.
  • As an employee — in performance reviews and negotiations, hoping for the next opportunity.
  • As a teammate — hesitant to speak up, only to watch a bolder colleague voice my ideas and take the credit.
  • As a community member — staying silent, hoping someone else would voice my concerns and drive change.
  • As an entrepreneur — waiting for a “yes,” one post from viral, one application from award-winning.
  • As a partner — from nightly dinner plans to financial investments, hoping decisions would be made for me.

It took me way too long to understand a hard truth: no one else will make my future their priority.

No one but me.

Want something? Put yourself on the path to get it.

Don’t wait for someone else to notice your goals, your work, or your results. Bring it to their attention, regularly.

Own your ambitions. Advocate for your growth. Bring your accomplishments to the table.

No one is coming to save you. Be your own superhero.

Don’t take off the suit.

This Week’s Challenge: Show Up for Your Future Self.

Where do you want to be? Find a way to show up there today.

  • Want to lead? Speak up in the next meeting.
  • Want to grow your network? Introduce yourself to someone new.
  • Want to be recognized? Share your wins, even the small ones.
  • Want to make a difference? Be the one to raise the concern, take the action, start the conversation.
  • Want to build something? Take the first step, even if it’s just writing the idea down.

Your future self is waiting for you to take that first step right now. (Sequin flip-flops optional—but highly recommended. ??)

May this mentorship find the person who needs to hear it. Report back—tell us what step you took!

So many hidden gems out there, working diligently and waiting to be noticed, chosen and recognized. Your work does not speak for itself! You give it a voice. And legs. The tactics you share here seem simple and small yet they are powerful.
