The Mentoring Manifesto, Vol. 73: The Identity Equation

Time Management + Money Management + Image Management = Identity

How we manage our time, money, and image is a good indicator of what matters most to us. If we want to get to know someone without spending time with them, we could look at three things: their calendar, their bank and credit card statements, and their social media. Think about it…

Time:?Are they at church or the baseball field on Sunday mornings in the summer? Does work travel compete with family commitments? If so, who wins?

Money:?How does golf or eating-out spending compare to giving? If they give, what does that money go to?

Image:?What accounts do they follow? What do they post about? How much time and energy do they put into social media?

Identity is a complex issue because humans are complex creations. In his book,?The Gift of Being Yourself,?author David Benner makes this profound statement, “In all of creation, identity is a challenge only for humans. A tulip knows exactly what it is. It is never tempted by false ways of being. Nor does it face complicated decisions in the process of becoming. So it is with dogs, rocks, trees, stars, amoebas, electrons and all other things. All give glory to God by being exactly what they are. For in being what God means them to be, they are obeying him. Humans, however, encounter a more challenging existence. We think. We consider options. We decide. We act. We doubt. Simple being is tremendously difficult to achieve and fully authentic being is extremely rare.”

Wrestling with our identity is a lifelong process and will likely be an ongoing conversation throughout the mentoring season. Nothing is more important than engaging mentees in conversations about their solid identities as adopted children of their loving Heavenly Father. Mentors, share your struggles and your journey here and lean into the challenges we all face in letting our identity shape our response to competing priorities; the resources below will help you.
