Evolve Undervalued Managers' Leadership through Mentoring
In the organization movement of leadership (with leading), managers often face the daunting task of balancing personal performance, shared productivity with people adeptness.?
Some managers, while effective in their roles, remain undervalued because they lack certain key qualities that would make them exceptional manger-leaders.?
This is where mentoring can play a transformative role. Through a wholistic and reciprocal approach to mentoring, undervalued managers can evolve into versatile (handy) leaders who are both respected and relevant (while maximizing their managing effectiveness).
The Story of Stacie and Amul
To illustrate the point of the article, let's connect Stacie (mentor) and Amul (mentee).?
Stacie Resan, a data-driven manager who once solely focused on metrics and performance, was struggling to connect with her group on a personal level. Her mentor introduced her to the importance of emotional intelligence (EQ) and the impact it could have on her leadership style.?
Stacie's effectiveness as a leader improved significantly as she started incorporating character and consequence criteria, ultimately paving the way for her advancement.
Amul Norsh, a manager with an introverted person-ability, often shies away from crucial conversations. While he excelled in collaborative discussions, his inability to engage in direct communication held him back.?
Recognizing his potential, Stacie took Amul under her wing, guiding him to balance collaboration with confrontation. Through their mentoring relationship, Amul learned to navigate challenging conversations with confidence, significantly improving his leadership capabilities.
The Role of Mentoring in Leadership Evolution
Mentoring, when done correctly, is about transferring knowledge/skills/attitude AND fostering a deeper, simpler, better, wiser, kinder transformation.?
Consider these 5 ways to evolve undervalued managers using awareness leading (through intention/attention):
1. Embrace Emotional Intelligence
For managers like Stacie, who focused on metrics, developing EQ was a significant shift.?
Her mentor encouraged the importance of empathy, active (awareness) listening, and emotional regulation.
This shift in focus can lead to better team/group dynamics, improved/strengthen employee satisfaction, and a coordinated/harmonious work environment.
Action Steps:
2. Overcome Personal Limitations
Many managers have inherent assets that make them good at their jobs AND have hindrances that prevent them from reaching their full potential.?
For Amul, his introversion was a significant barrier.
Through mentoring, a mentee (and mentor) can leverage collaborative skills while also developing the courage to engage in crucial conversations.
Stacie tailored strategies to help Amul overcome his specific hindrances.
Action Steps:
3. Foster an Adeptive Orientation
An adeptive orientation is the belief one develops abilities and intelligence through dedication and focused/attentive work balancing adoptive and adaptive decisions.?
Mentors can instill this orientation in undervalued managers, encouraging them to see challenges as opportunities for improvement and focused learning.
This shift in perspective can lead to increased resilience and a willingness to take on additional responsibilities.
Stacie found this perspective to be true from her mentor and gifted these concepts and practices to Amul.
Action Steps:
4. Enhance Communication Skills
Effective communication is a cornerstone of remarkable leadership.
Mentoring helped/is helping managers like Stacie and Amul improve their communication skills, whether it’s learning to articulate ideas clearly, engaging in active (awareness) listening, or handling tough conversations with tact and diplomacy.?
Improved communication leads to better relationships with team/group members and a more collaborative work environment.
Action Steps:
5. Seed a Legacy of Leadership
Mentoring is about immediate improvements. Also, it’s about nourishing a legacy.?
领英推荐
Managers who evolve into effective leaders through mentoring are more likely to mentor others in return, creating a ripple effect of shift throughout the organization of work.?
This legacy of leadership ensures this movement continues to thrive long after the original mentor and mentee have moved on.
Action Steps:
Moving Forward
Mentoring is a robust tool/technique to help undervalued managers unlock their full potential and evolve into outstanding leaders.
By embracing emotional intelligence, overcoming personal limitations, fostering an adeptive decision orientation, enhancing communication skills, and building a legacy of leadership, managers can improve their own performance and contribute to the overall success of their organizations and the groups they serve.?
Each manager’s unique journey may be challenging. When they adventure together with a mentor, the managers can surpass their own expectations and leave a lasting legacy that inspires others.
Stacie found that to be true. Because of Stacie, Amul found it to be true.
And with a legacy lens, those Amul mentors will move forward because of the wholistic, reciprocal mentoring they receive.
May the mentoring continue!
