Briefly, What is Mentoring?
Mentoring is a reciprocal relationship in which one person helps guide another person asking quality questions. It’s about sharing knowledge! More so, it’s about mutual growth and learning. With wholistic mentoring you gain new insights and perspectives, applicable in all areas of your life. The same is true for the mentee and those who the mentor and mentee impact directly and indirectly because of the original mentoring arrangement.
The Benefits of Mentoring for Olders
Mentoring can have a profound impact on your life as you age.?
Purpose and Meaning: Mentoring gives you a sense of purpose. Helping others find their way and sharing your experiences can be incredibly fulfilling. It makes you feel needed and valued, which is essential for emotional well-being.
Continuous Learning: Mentoring keeps your mind active. As you engage with younger people, you stay updated with new trends, technologies, and ideas. This continuous learning helps keep your brain sharp and alert.
Social Connection: Mentoring builds strong social connections. These relationships combat loneliness and isolation, which are common issues among older adults. Social interactions are crucial for maintaining good mental health.
Legacy Building: Mentoring allows you to leave a legacy. By passing on your knowledge and values, you ensure that your wisdom and experiences live on, even after you’re gone.
Fictional Stories from Factional EXperiences of Mentoring for Confidentiality
Hearing real-life stories can inspire and show you the impact mentoring can have. Here are a couple of stories from mentors who have experienced the benefits firsthand:
Story 1: Jane, a retired teacher, decided to mentor a young woman named Sarah who was struggling with her grade 7 class management. Through regular sessions, Jane not only helped Sarah improve her approach, Jane discovered content for writing an ebook for other struggling K-12 teachers. Jane felt more alive and connected to youngers, and Sarah gained a trusted advisor and friend. More so, they found an adventure together as they wrote the ebook.
Story 2: Mark, a retiring project manager, began mentoring a group of junior engineers at a local college. He shared his professional experiences, guiding them through a project that meant 50% of their final course grade. In return, Mark learned about the latest developments in engineering, keeping his mind sharp and engaged. The junior engineers felt more confident in their project decisions and appreciated Mark’s wisdom and support.

You don’t have to look at mentoring as a separate activity. You can incorporate it into your daily life:
Family/Friends Mentoring: Share your experiences and wisdom with your grandchildren or younger family members. Family gatherings can be great opportunities for informal mentoring. Include friends here as well. However, ask permission to mentor - no assuming you can!
Community Involvement: Get involved in community programs where you can share your skills. Libraries, schools, and community centers often have mentoring programs.

Even then, I will have groomed my juniors to take over and continue to serve and mentor my clients. This purpose keeps my keen and alive, as does your concept of elder versus older.
