Mentoring has made me a better leader

Mentoring has made me a better leader

?Mentoring has made me a better leader.?????

My mentoring journey started about 12 years ago in the?City of Portland. Since then, I have mentored hundreds of individuals through multiple organizations including?Project Management Institute, Official Portland (OR) Chapter?SIM Portland Chapter?Washington State University Vancouver?Portland State University?and many others...

You can help someone take the next step in their career, build a stronger community around them, and develop an increased sense of fulfillment by giving back. The mentee will learn how to work more effectively with others, as well as how to navigate the complexities of the organization and get things done.??

There are so many times when we can become stuck in place, but asking for help does not mean that we are weak or incompetent. It usually indicates an advanced level of honesty and intelligence.

?I have always been a strong believer in mentoring. I think it's one of the best ways to grow and develop as a leader and mentor. As a mentor, you'll also learn new things from the mentee—and maybe even change your perspective on things! You may find yourself looking at situations from different angles or examining old ideas with renewed interest.

I will also take it one step further to see if you are inspiring your mentees to become mentors one day and pay it forward.

Remember, the level of consciousness that got you where you are today is not the level that will get you where you want to be. Think big — with mentors and help cultivate the next generation of leaders and mentors.

How has mentoring helped you? Post it in the comments below.??

Saby I love this "Remember, the level of consciousness that got you where you are today is not the level that will get you where you want to be. Think big — with mentors and help cultivate the next generation of leaders and mentors." Thinking big tends to diminish as we gain tenure in our organizations. When I consult I'm often aware of how quickly my big vision will dim once I become ensconced in and organization. You are right! Mentoring can help us remember to think big! Excellent post.
