Mentor, Coach, Sponsor: Is there a difference?
More often than not we tend to use the terms mentor, coach and sponsor synonymously, overlooking the differences that exist. While it is true that the terms are closely related to one another and the same person can, in fact, play all the three roles, however, the difference lies in the nature of the role and when one might actually need it.
Mentor
Mentors are primarily individuals who come with certain skills and expertise that you might seek. They help you navigate challenges and opportunities in your personal and professional owing to their experience of handling it directly or indirectly. They aim to guide you and support you to help you achieve your desired goals.
Coach
Coaches focus on more holistic growth and help you identify tools and techniques to overcome challenges by allowing you to explore different avenues. They offer constant support and encouragement to help you in setting and achieving goals.
Sponsor
A mentor often becomes your sponsor after a certain point in time. Sponsors understand and believe in your capabilities. They become your ambassadors in public forums and advocate your case. A sponsor invariably has confidence in you and does not step back from talking about your capabilities and strengths to others.
Once you understand the differences between a mentor, coach, and sponsor, it is a cakewalk to identify which one you need at this particular point in your life.
