??? Every morning, as I prepare for work, I engage in a ritual of listening to various news podcasts and reports – a routine I've had for many years. In a world grappling with relentless global challenges and conflicts, this daily practice has become increasingly challenging, casting a shadow on my mood and mental health. The prevalence of destruction and loss of human life in today's landscape makes it even more crucial to prioritise our mental health and wellbeing. In these turbulent times, let's explore timeless wisdom that transcends the chaos, drawing inspiration from the Stoic teachings of Epictetus.
?? Embrace What You Can Control: Epictetus wisely stated, "We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them." Taking this to heart, I focus on what's within my control. Can I be kinder to the people I meet? Can I take a moment to compliment someone's good work? Can I genuinely show interest in someone's life or listen to their concerns? Amid external uncertainty, directing our attention to our responses, attitudes, and actions becomes paramount.
?? The Power of Perspective: Perspective, as Epictetus suggests, is the needle that weaves the threads of our experiences. Viewing challenges as opportunities for growth and taking moments to be grateful for our circumstances, no matter how difficult, we have it, there are always people who less fortunate than us.
?? Connect with Virtue and Values: Anchoring ourselves to values and beliefs brings a level of stability. Personally, I rely on my belief system and find solace in reading history, reflecting on past events, and deriving wisdom from them.
??♂? The Practice of Mindfulness: Emphasising the importance of self-awareness and mindfulness. In the chaos of our fast-paced world, carving out moments for introspection and reflection becomes a powerful tool for maintaining mental health. Tuning into the present moment offers sanctuary amidst the noise.

??♂? Physical Wellbeing: Exercise and fresh air are vital, but altering daily habits occasionally can positively impact wellbeing. Personally, I inject humour into my day by watching comedy or funny short videos, uplifting my mood. Revisiting videos from past happy moments is another strategy. I was even told recently that holding an ice cube in each hand can help in stress management.
?? Celebrate Small Victories: The importance of celebrating small victories cannot be overstated. Taking a moment to acknowledge and reward oneself, regardless of the size of the accomplishment, contributes to a positive mindset.
?? Spending Time with Loved Ones: Research confirms the health benefits of having a social capital in reducing stress and depression. Evenings spent chatting with family or friends about shared interests or reminiscing about the good old days are invaluable. I have a few friends that I can connect, speak, vent, and unwind with and it is a cherished support system.
In conclusion, as Epictetus whispers in the ancient breeze, "Find thy peace amidst the tumultuous seas." Always remember that you can only help if you are well yourself.

1 年Inspiring, indeed. Mine is to keep the cellphone away till after my daily morning rituals; including reconnecting with the household. This came after realising that checking on the breaking news or the latest updates from various (social)media sources as soon as getting off the sleep has the potential to result in addiction, loneliness. The exercise requires discipline, though.

I'll keep this in mind. Physical activity is not only good for your body, but it's also great for your mind.
