Mental Health Support
Last night we ran our third Mental health support circle, these are sessions where we talk about a range of topics and lend support if it is needed, signpost and offer advice.
The topic that came up yesterday was the Lisa Lowe Appeal walk. We drew comparisons with the walk and a mental health journey.
The walk was along the Millennium Way and for those that do not know this route; it is a 26 mile stretch that carves through the length of the Island covering countryside and roads alike.
Many people can do this on their own but by taking part in an organised event, the walker knows that someone is looking out for them, refreshments are never too far away and on the tricky parts, marshals are there to make sure you safely reach the other side of the road. Walkers help each other, boosting each other through the difficult times and often building new friendships along the way. The feeling of completing the walk, reaching that finishing line is a joy to watch and hearing stories of battling the conditions are often awe inspiring.
The mental health journey is no different, if you or a loved one is struggling, encourage them to find assistance, offer social support and on the tricky parts of the journey, seek help from a professional. Read a map of the journey ahead by visiting a support group.
You might be one of the few that walk the mental health journey on your own and reach the end absolutely fine, but you don’t have too, places like The Lisa Lowe Centre are here to help you along the way.
