Mental Health - My Journey

Mental Health - My Journey

After a lot of reflection and some inspiration from some much more prominent LinkedIn folks (thanks Steve Trippier,) I wanted to write a short article on mental health and how important it is to realise you don't have to do everything on your own.

Anyone who knows me will understand that I am fiercely independent and not keen to ask for help or support. This has come from my upbringing but also from the nature of running and working in recruitment agencies for many, many years before turning to the dark side that is internal recruitment. However, some recent personal battles have meant that I have needed some support and a virtual arm around my shoulder.

After the initial feelings of "why am I suddenly so weak", "I don't need help" and of course the standard "I'm ok" response to people checking in on me. A couple of people reached out and managed to unlock some conversations. I would definitely describe these chats as awkward and not comfortable for me (or them) but ultimately they are a step in the right direction on my journey and will help me work through these things.

I am very lucky to work for such a supportive company here at Anglian Water who really do go the extra mile to provide all of the support and help you could need BUT you do need to be open to accept or explore it. Just remember you are not alone.

I am not writing this article so people feel sorry for me, pat me on the head for speaking about it or even to promote Anglian Water (although we are great!) It's just a gentle note to say if you can see someone is struggling then reach out to them and see if you can help, you might be the person that they finally open up to.

If you have got this far then I promise my next article will be more cheery!
