Mental health - it matters!
Welcome back to the Jennifer Nash Newsletter!
It seems like everywhere I turn, I’m hearing that so many people — school children, health care workers, and yes — even executive leaders — are experiencing social isolation, anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. And it’s no surprise, since people are working longer hours, are burned out, and have experienced shared trauma due to the pandemic.?
Yet, there still seems to be a stigma, or at least a fear to discuss mental health issues professionally — and there really shouldn’t be.
Addressing mental health issues and encouraging your employees to do the same can benefit you and your organization.
1. Ginger’s The State of Employee Mental Health in 2022 report’s preliminary findings suggest that “80% of interviewed CEOs have missed work due to stress, anxiety, or other emotional or mental health challenges.” Yet employer support for mental health seems to be lessening. If you’re in a leadership position, consider how you can support your employees and bridge this divide.
2. One way to close the gap is by prioritizing your own mental health. This effort may look different for everyone. For some people, it will involve being vocal about your self care measures. Others may feel more comfortable seeking professional support. Remember, you’re not alone here. So many incredible people, like Simone Biles , Naomi Osaka , Prince Harry , and many others, have spoken out and set boundaries around their own mental health needs.

3. Finally, it’s important to know how to talk about mental health in the workplace when help is needed. Here’s a great Harvard Business Review article that details steps you can take to get accommodations or support from your employer. I hope it’s helpful for you, and even if this isn’t a concern of yours at the moment, I hope you’ll read and pass on the message to the people in your lives.
If you are dealing with mental health issues, I just want to reiterate that you're not alone. I hope you’ll take a step today to prioritize your mental health and wellbeing, and encourage those around you to do the same.
Take care,
Jennifer
