Mental Health Matters: Breaking the Stigma and Seeking Support

Hello Friends!

We're well into 2025 and I'm glad you're here this week to explore an important topic that affects many of us: mental health. Let's discuss why breaking the stigma around mental health is crucial and how we can seek support when we need it.

Understanding Mental Health Stigma

Mental health stigma refers to negative attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors towards individuals experiencing mental health challenges. Unfortunately, this stigma is still prevalent in our society. In Canada, studies have shown that:

  • Just under half of Canadians thought that a mental illness was just an excuse for poor behavior
  • Only about one in three Canadians would continue to be friends with someone diagnosed with a mental illness

These misconceptions can prevent people from seeking help and support when they need it most.

The Impact of Stigma

Stigma can have serious consequences for those experiencing mental health challenges:

  • It may discourage individuals from seeking treatment
  • It can lead to social isolation and discrimination
  • It might affect employment and housing opportunities
  • It can worsen symptoms and delay recovery

Breaking the Stigma

Here are some ways we can work together to break the stigma surrounding mental health:

  1. Educate ourselves and others about mental health
  2. Share personal stories to humanize mental health challenges
  3. Use respectful language when discussing mental health
  4. Challenge misconceptions and stereotypes when we encounter them
  5. Support mental health initiatives and organizations

Seeking Support

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, there are many resources available in Canada:

National Resources

  1. 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline: Available 24/7 for anyone experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress
  2. Kids Help Phone: Call 1-800-668-6868 or text CONNECT to 686868 for 24/7 support for young people
  3. Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA): Offers information about mental health resources, programs, and how to find support

Provincial Resources (Alberta)

  1. 211 Alberta: Call 2-1-1 or text INFO to 2-1-1 for 24/7 crisis support and connection to local mental health services
  2. Alberta Mental Health Line: Call 1-877-303-2642 for 24/7 confidential support and information

Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. If you're struggling, don't hesitate to reach out to these resources or speak with a healthcare professional.

Promoting Mental Health Awareness

We can all play a role in promoting mental health awareness:

  • Share reliable mental health information on social media
  • Participate in mental health awareness events
  • Support friends and family members who may be struggling
  • Practice self-care and prioritize your own mental health

By working together to break the stigma and promote support-seeking behavior, we can create a more compassionate and understanding society for everyone.

Until next week, stay wonderful and take care of your mental health. Remember, it's okay not to be okay, and help is always available when you need it.

Well said, Darlene. Whether we use terms such as mental health or mental wellness, it's about recognition. Something that has helped me grow in understanding and empathy is just to understand that there's no way I'll ever know the full story behind the way someone feels. Just be understanding and help when I can.

Thanks for raising awareness of the important issue of mental health. There continues to be a negative reaction to the term MENTAL HEALTH. We need to eliminate that stigma. Just as we need physical and social health, we also need mental health. Being a WHOLE person means we need to take care of all the parts that make up the whole person we are. Thank you Matthew Jubelius for the services and support you offer at VirtuClinic.
