How are you…really??

May is Mental Health Awareness month and we are here to support you with brain-healthy habits and resources for checking in and upleveling your mental wellness.

According to an American Psychological Association survey, nearly 3 in 5 employees have felt negative impacts of work-related stress on their mental health. Mindfulness is a great tool to incorporate into your workday for enhanced productivity and overall well being.

Here are 3 mindfulness-inspired tips to reduce anxiety and boost your mental health in the workplace:

  • When You’re Stressed or Anxious, S.T.O.P. When you notice yourself stressed or anxious, that is actually a moment of mindful awareness. Instead of fighting against stress or strong emotions, S.T.O.P. and take a mindful pause.
  • Notice Your Language. Often we exaggerate and identify with our negative emotions by saying things like “I am so anxious” or “This stress is killing me.” By shifting our language and saying something like, “Anxiety is present,” or “Stress is here in this moment,” we can remind ourselves that the challenging emotion is impermanent and doesn’t define us – it’s just a cloud moving through our blue sky of awareness. We are the sky, and everything else is the weather!
  • Look for What’s Right (Not What’s Wrong). Our brains have evolved to protect us with a negativity bias, meaning our brains are wired to focus on what’s wrong to keep us safe. We can rewire our brains for positivity by pausing to be grateful during the day, even if it’s something as small as a co-worker who made us laugh or a nice cup of coffee or tea. A positive attitude at work will enhance productivity and help keep stress levels down. Try this brief meditation to cultivate a more positive outlook.

Cultivating mental health is a lifelong journey. The good news? You have the power to live your life the way you desire, one mindful step at a time.
