Mental health: not just a first-world problem
Over the last couple of years, with the stress and strains of the pandemic measures around the world, the fragility of our mental health has been exposed profoundly. As we see the levels of stress and anxiety reaching the youngest and oldest members of our communities, we are all looking for ways to regain and maintain our mental health.
However Mental health is not only a first-world issue.
It is urgent to also make known that in underserved communities, in particular girls and women, refugees, migrants fleeing from climatic disasters, conflict, persecution, living in deep poverty, where domestic violence is the norm, where trauma, stress, stigamtisation, isolation and uncertainty are prevalent, mental health issues remain unidentified and untreated.?
According to the WHO, 85% of the 66 million women suffering from mental health conditions have no access to treatment.
This crisis needs to be called out and action must happen now.
