As we celebrate the 74nd Republic Day of India, it is important to take a moment to reflect on the state of mental health in our country. Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being and yet it is often overlooked or stigmatized in our society.
According to the World Health Organization, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. In India, the situation is no different. According to the National Mental Health Survey of India, nearly 150 million people in India suffer from some form of mental disorder.
The most common mental disorders in India include depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. These disorders can have a significant impact on an individual's quality of life and can lead to decreased productivity, social isolation, and even suicide.
The lack of access to mental health services is a major issue in India. According to the National Mental Health Survey of India, only 10% of people with mental disorders receive any form of treatment. This is due in part to the shortage of mental health professionals in the country, as well as the lack of awareness and understanding of mental health issues.

To address this issue, it is important for the government and society to take steps to improve access to mental health services and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. This can be done by increasing funding for mental health services, training more mental health professionals, and educating the public about mental health.
We must also recognize that mental health is not just an individual problem, but a societal one. Factors such as poverty, unemployment, and discrimination can contribute to mental health issues. Therefore, addressing these issues is crucial for improving mental health in India.
In conclusion, mental health is an important aspect of overall well-being and it is crucial for society to recognize the importance of mental health and take steps to improve access to mental health services and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health. On this Republic Day, let's pledge to work towards a society where mental health is valued and supported.
