Mental Health Disorders in Young People: Diagnosis and Assessment

Ivan Salmin, senior clinical psychologist at the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service will be delivering an insightful workshop on diagnosis and assessment of mental health disorders in young people.
WORKSHOP: The workshop explores the high prevalence of mental health issues facing young people and enhances skills in distinguishing low prevalence and common co-morbid diagnoses. Participants will gain a further understanding in the common modes of presentation and current thinking about aetiology. Furthermore, participants will receive training in the assessment of psychosocial wellbeing of adolescents using screening tools and psychometric instruments, learn practical interviewing skills and when to refer to child and adolescent mental health services.
PRESENTER: Ivan is a senior clinical psychologist with over 10 years of clinical experience. Ivan’s clinical work has been predominantly with children, adolescents and their families. Originally trained within the CBT model Ivan’s therapeutic approach has expanded over the years to other therapeutic frameworks including psychodynamic, systemic and mentalization-based therapy (MBT). After spending eight years with Eating Disorders Program at Princess Margaret Hospital, Ivan joined the newly established therapeutic team of Touchstone – the program that has been designed to provide an intensive multifaceted treatment to young people presenting with self-harm and emerging personality disorders.
RACGP points for the Youth Friendly Doctor workshops can be accrued either as Cat 1 (40 points) or Cat 2 (6 points) activities.
