The Mental Health Caddy: A Fresh Approach to Mental Health Awareness

Jason Finucan, founder of StigmaZero, is on a mission to change how we talk about mental health.
His latest venture? Becoming “The Mental Health Caddy,” a concept that promises to make mental health education more accessible and relatable.
Why a “Mental Health Caddy”? In golf, a caddy is a companion who provides both practical support and strategic guidance. Their role extends well beyond physical tasks, going into emotional and behavioural moral support.
Finucan’s ultimate goal is to help end the stigma of mental illness so people will be more likely to reach for help, rather than fall into despair or worse, die by suicide. As your?Mental Health Caddy, Jason's keynotes offer insight that helps audiences better manage mental illness, both for those diagnosed and for their caregivers.
“I have managed living with bipolar 1 disorder for more than 22 years. I know all of the pitfalls, as well as all of the strategies needed to better manage mental illnesses, and it is my mission to use my knowledge to help others,” Finucan explains.
His approach draws from personal experiences with physical illness (a heart defect that required open heart surgery in 1988) and mental illness diagnosed in 2005 (bipolar 1 disorder).
More recently, Jason experienced a 7-month long severe depressive episode which brought suicidal ideation. He deeply understands how one can fall to that dark place, and how to survive with the help of a support system. Audiences of Jason's keynotes walk away with the insight, knowledge and skills needed to not just survive mental illness, but thrive despite it.
Breaking Down Barriers
One of the key challenges in mental health awareness and education is making the content both informative and approachable. Finucan’s caddy concept addresses this head-on:
– It presents mental health struggles in a hopeful, non-triggering manner.
– It offers practical strategies for managing both mental health and mental illnesses.
– It provides insights for all, from individuals experiencing mental health challenges or illnesses, their caregivers and those who have never experienced it.
The Power of Male Voices
Finucan emphasizes the importance of men speaking openly about mental health and illnesses – and in particular suicidal ideation.
“I’m a rare example of a man who will not only speak about his experience with mental illness but who also speaks openly about suicidal ideation, which is vital,” he states.
This openness is crucial. Many men struggle to discuss mental health challenges and illnesses, often due to societal expectations and stigma. By sharing his story, Finucan hopes to encourage more men to seek help and support.
From Experience to Education
What sets Finucan’s approach apart is his ability to transform personal struggles into valuable lessons. He doesn’t just share his story; he packages it in a way that’s immediately useful to others.
“I don't talk about anything unless I’ve already processed the experience and moved on from it,” Finucan explains.
This method allows him to speak from a place of strength and present difficult topics in a way that’s inspirational rather than triggering.
The Road Ahead
As Finucan shares his “Mental Health Caddy” brand with the world, he’s clear about his ultimate goal: to save lives. By making mental health education more accessible and relatable, he hopes to end the stigma and in doing so, reach those who might otherwise slip through the cracks.
