Mental Health Awareness Week vs Face Equality Week

Today marks the beginning of Face Equality Week and Mental Health Week, both of which hold deep significance for me.
Reflecting on my childhood experiences around the age of 7 or 8, I hadn't fully grasped the weight of depression and anxiety. However, in hindsight, I realise I was grappling with these emotions. Social situations, school, and interactions with other children were met with reluctance on my part.
I vividly remember instances when relatives visited with their children, who, upon noticing my facial difference, would hide behind their parents, tears in their eyes.
While we often focus on the mental health struggles of adults, we tend to overlook the emotional turmoil children endure, especially those with disabilities or visible differences like myself. In school, children can face bullying and isolation, lacking understanding of how to cope.
I often came home and stared at the mirror, questioning why I looked 'different', spending hours crying in my room and sometimes faking illness to avoid school.
One reason I left my job to become a keynote speaker is that if I had received support as a child, it would have made a huge difference in my life. I take pride in visiting schools, sharing my story, and encouraging children to embrace their uniqueness.
During this week, let's look out for one another and inquire about each other's well-being, including our children and young people.
If you're interested in my school workshops or lunch and learns for businesses on resilience and confidence, reach out. Let's chat.
