Mental Health Awareness Week: How to navigate new job anxiety

As it is Mental Health Awareness Week, the focus this year is on anxiety. In the recruitment industry, it's common for many candidates to experience feelings of anxiety when starting a new job, especially if they're taking on a more significant role or joining a larger team.

While it's challenging to completely overcome these feelings, there are effective strategies to minimise their impact and help you manage them.

With that in mind, here are some top tips to help you navigate the anxiety that comes with starting a new job!

Identify exactly what is making you anxious

Although you may feel a general sense of anxiety about starting your new job, it's crucial to pinpoint the underlying causes of your anxiety. By getting to the root of your anxiety, you'll be better equipped to work through it.

For example…

  • If you are anxious to meet new people, then try connecting with members of your team on LinkedIn to familiarise yourself with the team before your first day and break the ice.
  • If you feel worried about your job responsibilities, you may feel more at ease if you ask about what you day would normally look like in order to gain clarity on your role. ?

Be prepared

It goes without saying that by organising yourself prior to your first day, you will likely feel more confident and relaxed during an inevitably stressful time.

Being prepared also includes doing your research before joining a company. You may have spent some time researching prior to your interview; however, this is the time to really understand the company culture and the tone of the business, which should ease any concerns you may have.

Expect to make mistakes

Starting a new job can be daunting, whether you're taking on an entry-level or senior position. It's important to remember that this challenge is not a reflection of your capabilities, but rather a result of being new to the role.

You will not be expected to know everything from day one or even in your first week. To cushion this, most companies have a probationary period in place, during which you can learn and develop at your own pace. Embrace this opportunity to grow and don't be too hard on yourself!

Remember to take breaks

It can be easy to get overwhelmed when starting a new job, and it's essential to take breaks throughout the day to avoid burnout. Taking regular breaks will help you to stay focused, clear-headed, and productive.

Make sure to step away from your desk and take a walk, or even just take a few deep breaths to clear your mind and reset!
