This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s embark on a journey to explore the transformative power of prioritizing mental health, especially within the realm of healing and recovery. This month beckons us to delve deeper into understanding how fostering mental well-being can be instrumental in the healing and recovery processes, both personally and professionally.
I have been working with multiple therapists and mental health professionals since I was five years old. I have experienced chronic stress, debilitating anxiety, panic attacks, and spent the last five years overcoming one of the greatest physical and mental challenges of my lifetime.
Here’s why prioritizing mental health is crucial for fostering healing and recovery:
- Empowering Self-Care: Prioritizing mental health empowers individuals to embark on their healing journey. By fostering environments that encourage self-care practices such as mindfulness, meditation, and seeking therapy, businesses can provide employees with the tools they need to embark on their path to healing and recovery. For example, a company that offers mindfulness workshops or meditation spaces in the workplace empowers employees to prioritize their mental well-being, ultimately contributing to their healing process.
- Building Resilience: Mental health challenges can often leave individuals feeling vulnerable and overwhelmed. However, by prioritizing mental health, businesses can help employees build resilience and navigate through difficult times. Through resilience-building initiatives such as resilience training, peer support groups, and resilience-focused leadership development programs, organizations can equip employees with the skills needed to bounce back from adversity and continue on their journey toward healing and recovery.
- Creating Supportive Communities: Healing and recovery thrive in environments where individuals feel supported and understood. By prioritizing mental health, businesses can foster supportive communities where employees feel comfortable sharing their struggles and seeking support from their peers and supervisors. For instance, a company that promotes open dialogue about mental health and offers employee resource groups for specific mental health challenges creates a supportive ecosystem where individuals feel validated and empowered in their healing journey.
- Promoting Holistic Well-Being: Healing and recovery encompass not only the mind but also the body and spirit. By prioritizing mental health, businesses can promote holistic well-being and recognize the interconnectedness of mental, physical, and emotional health. Through initiatives such as wellness programs, flexible work arrangements, and access to mental health resources, organizations can support employees in nurturing all aspects of their well-being, fostering a holistic approach to healing and recovery.
- Embracing Creativity: Creativity heals in more powerful and productive ways than we may realize. Creativity isn't just fun, it's essential for any business leader and any corporate team - and business - to thrive. Practicing creativity helps leaders to mindfully observe and assess any situation without judgement or reactivity, for example. Healing and recovery often require individuals to confront their vulnerabilities and embrace growth. By creating environments that encourage vulnerability and growth, businesses can facilitate the healing process for employees. Through initiatives such as storytelling sessions, leadership coaching, and mentorship programs, organizations can create spaces where individuals feel safe to share their experiences, learn from each other, and embark on transformative journeys of healing and recovery.
This Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s recommit ourselves to prioritizing mental health as a pathway to healing and recovery. Together, we can create workplaces where everyone feels empowered to prioritize mental well-being, embark on their healing and recovery journeys and thrive personally and professionally.

I'm proud to share the publication of my first book - Pieces of Me (https://a.co/d/4z2VcNy) It is a collection of poems of returning home to myself from mental illness, trauma, heartbreak and the road to recovery. Please share it with others, so that it can make it into the hands of those that may need it. Those who need some help opening their eyes to see that they, too, are home and always have been. You aren't broken. You are right where you need to be in this very moment. You are home. "Pieces of Me is a collection of poetry and writings that come from experiencing disordered eating, sexual assault, trauma, mental illness, self-harm, depression, suicide, addiction, grief, heartbreak, transformation, relapse and recovery. Each piece speaks from a different part of myself that found their voice along the recovery journey. Life is about feeling all the emotions, regardless of how scary and uncomfortable they may be. No matter how hard we try to hide them, they will find a way of coming up. This book allowed all of the parts of me to say what they have been needing to say, without consequence. They kept me company on my long journey home. Contact her at [email protected]."
