Mental Health Awareness - Loneliness

The ‘Epidemic Of Loneliness’ and How Hypnotherapy Could HelpTackle It?

It’s Mental Health Awareness Week from 9th-15th?May. This year’s campaign is focused on the impact of loneliness on mental wellbeing and what we can do to beat it. Let’s look at the most common reasons for loneliness and how hypnotherapy can help tackle them.????????????????

An Epidemic of Loneliness

Despite being more connected digitally than we ever have been, real connection is suffering. How many times have you been tempted to just fire off a text to a friend because it’s quicker than calling them? How many people on your Facebook friends list do you see regularly? Digital connection doesn’t translate into social connection, and more of us than ever are affected by loneliness. The pandemic showed us how vital staying connected with others is for our mental and physical health.?

What is Loneliness, Really?

Many of us have probably felt lonely at some point in our lives. Loneliness can look different for everyone. It’s not about the number of friends we have. It’s not about how much time we spend alone, or something that’s inevitable when we get older. Loneliness happens when our need or want for connection with others isn’t met.?

What Causes Loneliness?

There are lots of circumstances or life events that can leave someone feeling lonely, including;

Going through a bereavement;

Going through a break-up;

Retiring and losing contact with work colleagues;

Changing jobs and feeling like you don’t ‘fit in’ somewhere new;

Going to university in a different city;

Moving to a new area where you don’t have an established support network;

Dealing with a mental health problem or chronic illness which impacts on your day to day life.

How is Loneliness Linked to Mental Health?

A lot of people struggle to say they are lonely, as if it’s something to be ashamed of. Loneliness and isolation is a predictor of poor mental and physical health as well as higher mortality.?Research?has found that depression and loneliness can predict early mortality. The same study found that loneliness was a risk factor for depression later on in life.?

The Pandemic Brought It all Home?

Loneliness is one of those things that can fly under the radar. Think about how many people you see in an average week. Do you convince yourself that because you’ve sent a friend a few messages on Facebook or you’ve commented on their post, that it counts as connection? It kind of does, but it’s not the type of connection that fends off loneliness.?

The pandemic showed us this and reminded us of how much we need connection and community. How tough was it when we couldn’t see family, friends, or other people we care about? Even just those we are used to seeing from day to day. We missed that hello or smile from the person in the coffee shop or at the checkout. It all counts as connection. But loneliness hasn’t just been a problem since the pandemic, it has long been a growing issue. The government has even?developed a strategy?to tackle it. If you’re lonely, I’m proposing a different kind of strategy; hypnotherapy.?

How Hypnotherapy Can Help Tackle Loneliness

As we reflect on loneliness this week, I want you to know that you never have to be alone. Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for some of the causes of loneliness.

Are you socially anxious and find it hard to meet new people?

Are you generally anxious and tend to avoid new experiences, or even going out at all?

Do you suffer from?depression?and isolate yourself for fear of being judged or being ‘terrible company’?

Hypnotherapy can help with all of these and more, and it all starts in the subconscious. The subconscious mind is where most of our old unhelpful thoughts, beliefs, and ‘unfinished business’ hides out. I can work with you and using some effective hypnotherapy techniques, we can clear it all out and replace it with more positive thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours. How would it feel to enjoy life again, and feel less lonely??

Do you feel lonely?

Do you feel like if you could just get that one thing under control, you’d be able to get out there and connect far more easily with others?

Get in touch to find out hypnotherapy can help you feel less lonely, more connected, and in control of your life again.?

Everyone deserves to be happy!?
