Mental Health Awareness
Awareness is a form of education and the more one knows, the more power one has. Awareness is also the key to understanding mental health and related concerns. In this fast-paced world, we have become obsessed with seeking quick and simple answers, compulsively checking social media and seeking validation from strangers. The pressure on an individual to perform is also that much higher. Hence discussion on mental health is more important now than ever.
How we feel, how we navigate through the complexities and how we behave in our daily life influence our mental health immensely. Our emotional and mental health affects our ability to cope with stress, overcome challenges and build relationships. Yet, despite how crucial mental health is to one’s well-being, we continue to stigmatize the discussion. This stigma is a major barrier to seeking help and promoting better mental health and is often caused by those who don’t understand the repercussions of mental health. Like physical illnesses, mental illness can be treated too. The movement towards healing takes time and requires a lot of patience and acceptance from the society to de-stigmatize seeking help and eliminate misconceptions and negative labels that have been attached due to lack of awareness.
Mental health can affect all, young and old, male and female, rich and poor. Lack of knowledge about the mental illnesses poses a challenge to the mental health care system and it is crucial to increase understanding and overcome stigma associated with mental illnesses through education and communication. It is crucial to keep the conversation about mental health on-going within the society and let’s strive to be understanding and patient with those around us.
