The ability to respond effectively to crises requires decisive action and well-informed decisions. Unfortunately, the pressures of a crisis can lead to the influence of unconscious biases in our thinking. This week's edition of The Weekly Crisis Thought focuses on the most common biases in crisis management and how they can negatively affect the outcome of crisis response efforts.
Unpacking the Concept: Understanding What a Bias is!
As critical thinkers and advocates for scientific literacy, it's crucial must understandnce of our biases and assumptions. No matter our education, intellectual dedication, or noble intentions, we are all susceptible to biases.
A bias is defined as a deeply ingrained and preconceived notion about someone or something, shaped by the information we possess, perceive to possess, or lack thereof. It's a subjective way of thinking that stems from one's own perception and viewpoint. There are various types of biases that individuals experience, affecting how we think, btheyave, and perceive others.
Top Ten Biases to keep in Mind
Confirmation Bias: The tendency to only seek out information that confirms one's existing beliefs and ignore information that challenges them. In a crisis, it's important to consider all available information, even if it challenges your beliefs or assumptions.

Availability Bias: The tendency to make decisions based on the most easily available information, rather than the most relevant or accurate information. In a crisis, it's important to take the time to gather all relevant information and weigh it carefully before making a decision.

?Availability Cascade: A self-reinforcing process in which a collective belief gains more and more credibility through repeated assertions, regardless of whether the belief is accurate or not. Overconfidence Bias: The tendency to overestimate one's abilities and the accuracy of one's predictions. In a crisis, it's important to be humble and open to feedback, as well as seek out diverse perspectives to ensure the best outcome.

Framing Effect: How a problem or decision is framed can significantly impact the decision made. In a crisis, it's important to consider multiple frames and perspectives to ensure the best outcome.

?Anchoring Bias: The tendency to rely too heavily on the first piece of information encountered when making a decision, even if that information is not relevant or accurate. In a crisis, it's important to consider multiple sources of information and not become too fixated on any one piece of information.

In a crisis, it's important to reassess the situation regularly and adjust the response as necessary, rather than persist in a course of action simply because of past investments.

In a crisis, it's important to encourage open and honest communication, as well as seek out diverse perspectives, to avoid groupthink.

1 年Great summary. I was looking through to see which I thought would play the largest role in a crisis, but see more than a few. Anchoring, confirmation, availability, framing... I'd be curious to see which ones you thought become the biggest problems in a crisis.

1 年Thanks for a good article. I like to use examples of cognitive biases when I advice people on how to plan their duty travel to ensure they are aware of all the risks and take necessary preventative measures.

1 年Thanks Andreas W. for a great reminder! I’d like to add the Halo Effect or Halo Bias. The phenomenon whereby evaluators tend to be influenced by their previous judgments of performance or personality. Especially if we are a safe and strong leader our team might rely heavily on our thoughts rather than make their own conclusions. So even if our crisis leadership is on point it might have an adverse effect. Also as a leader this works the other way round, accepting decisions from our experts based on how we feel about them in general rather than the arguments themselves.
