Men’s Health and Neurodivergence: Beyond Stereotypes and Silence*

Neurodivergence?is a term that describes when someone’s brain processes, learns, and/or behaves differently from what is considered “typical.”

It encompasses a wide range of variations in mental functions and can include many neurological conditions or developmental differences

In this article, we’ll explore what neurodivergence means, its impact on men’s health, and how society can better support neurodivergent individuals.

What Is Neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence refers to people whose brain functions differ from what is considered typical. Rather than viewing these differences as deficits, neurodiversity emphasizes that there is no one “right” way of thinking, learning, or behaving.?

Instead, it encourages us to embrace diversity and recognize the unique abilities and needs of each individual.

Neurodivergence encompasses a wide range of conditions and variations in brain function.

Here are some common examples:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): ASD affects social communication, behavior, and sensory processing. Individuals with ASD may have difficulty with social interactions, repetitive behaviors, and intense interests.
  • Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): ADHD is characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. People with ADHD may struggle with focus, organization, and impulse control.
  • Dyslexia: Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that affects reading and language processing. Individuals with dyslexia may have difficulty recognizing words, spelling, and decoding text.
  • Dyspraxia: Dyspraxia (also known as developmental coordination disorder) affects motor skills and coordination. People with dyspraxia may struggle with tasks like tying shoelaces or handwriting.
  • Tourette Syndrome: Tourette syndrome involves involuntary movements (tics) and vocalizations. It often begins in childhood and can vary in severity.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): OCD causes intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). These rituals are performed to alleviate anxiety.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): GAD leads to excessive worry and anxiety about various aspects of life. It can impact daily functioning and well-being.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar disorder involves mood swings between depressive and manic episodes. It affects emotions, energy levels, and behavior.
  • Schizophrenia: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterized by hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.
  • Giftedness: While not a disorder, being neurodivergent can also mean having exceptional abilities or talents. Gifted individuals may think differently and excel in specific areas.

Men are often less likely to seek help for mental health issues, including neurodivergent conditions. Stigma, societal expectations, and traditional gender norms can discourage men from acknowledging their struggles and seeking professional support. Communication Challenges

Neurodivergent men may face communication difficulties, especially in social situations. For example, individuals with ASD may struggle with nonverbal cues, making it harder to form connections and maintain relationships. Recognizing these challenges and providing targeted support can improve overall well-being.

Emotional Regulation

Some neurodivergent men experience heightened emotional sensitivity or difficulty regulating emotions. This can lead to anxiety, depression, or other mental health issues. Encouraging emotional literacy and coping strategies can enhance mental resilience.

Executive Functioning

Executive functioning refers to cognitive processes like planning, organizing, and time management. Neurodivergent men may have variations in executive functioning, affecting daily life tasks. Strategies such as visual aids, routines, and external reminders can mitigate these challenges.

Physical Health

Neurodivergence can indirectly impact physical health. Men with ADHD, for instance, may struggle with impulse control, leading to poor dietary choices, substance use, or risky behaviors. Promoting healthy lifestyle habits and addressing co-occurring conditions are essential.

I'm a Sex Therapist and have come across aome. I have found there are also challenges sexwise, due to that many neurodivergent men have sensory issues that make them have problems with stimuli processing making them feel somewhat uncomfortable to touch, and aversion to textures, such as body fluids, which limit them in physical and sexual intimacy interaction. Also the focus on sensations which limit them to keep their mind-body connection, hence having trouble keeping an erection, and so... Seems to me that they are also more susceptible to develop fixations (many causes associated to the condition). I have had some success in some cases with mindfulness based interventions in this kind of patient.
