Men's Health - It's In Your Hands

Men's Health - It's In Your Hands

Men face their own unique set of concerns and obstacles when it comes to taking care of their health and wellbeing. According to the Canadian Men’s Health Foundation, 30% of a man’s health is determined by his genetics – leaving 70% to be directly related to lifestyle choices. Further, Indigenous men face higher rates of chronic illness and poor wellbeing.

So, let’s talk about the small choices you can make today, to keep healthy for tomorrow.

Connect with your GP

If you don’t already have a regular GP – connect with one. Having a doctor in your corner who knows your history, your family history, risk factors and other details that affect your health, empowers you to take control of your health.

Once you have a regular GP, take the 15 minutes to have a general health check-in. Keeping up to date with regular health checks can identify minor health issues early – before they become major, or chronic. Early intervention can make a big difference!

Get Active

You don’t have to join a gym and body build to get your body moving – go for a walk or a bike ride, join a local sports team. Find ways to fit at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity into your day and muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week.

Studies show that only 17% of Australian men meet these activity recommendations. The benefits of increasing your physical activity help to reduce the chances of chronic diseases such as Type 2 Diabetes and cardiovascular disease (which affect Indigenous Men in much higher rates), improve mental health and your sleep quality.

Engaging a physiotherapist can help you get in tune with your body and keep it moving.
