MENDING WORKSHOP AT ESEDS (FRW 23)

23rd April 2013 Rana Plaza incident shook the world. The incident was enough to show the world the darker side of fast fashion. After seeing the horrific picture throughout the media we were all in shock.Knowingly or unknowingly because of our over consumerism we all were to be held responsible for such a disaster.This heinous incident led to the formation of the Fashion Revolution in 2013. Revolutionaries across the world stood together for a change in the fashion world.

The Fashion Revolution?stood to bring about a change and with time thousands of revolutionaries joined in from across the world and this became a global movement for change.The change to bring ethical and sustainable values.

Every year fashion revolution commemorates the week as fashion revolution week to pay tribute to the victims of the Rana Plaza incident and to stand for?human rights and the rights of nature. The campaigns are planned to amplify unheard voices across the fashion supply chain and harness the creativity of the community to explore innovative and interconnected solutions.

Like every year,this year 2023 ESEDS School of design actively took part in Fashion Revolution week. On 25 th of May?ESEDS in collaboration with Fashion Revolution week India and denim Darzi had hosted a mending workshop at ESEDS open studios,1 AGC Bose road.The workshop was mentored by the founder of Denim Darzi?Rupali Mukherjee.The brand works with old denims.They believe denims don’t die.Their objective is to give a great afterlife to denim.

The workshop was all about not throwing away your old garment and learning the technique of mending.This will help reduce the quantity of garment that ends up in landfills.The techniques like embroideries,patchwork,applique and other innovative techniques were demonstrated in the workshop. The students who participated in the workshop got their old outfits and implemented the mending techniques.

In America alone, an estimated 11.3 million?tons?of textile waste – equivalent to 85% of all textiles ends up in landfill.The number is likely to soar up every year.It takes a lot of resources to manufacture a single outfit.If we somehow manage to mend the existing outfits we will surely save a lot of resources and also reduce carbon emission and pollution.The climate change is directly linked with our consumerism and this is the high time we question and change our old habits.
