THE MENACE OF DRUG ABUSE AND ITS IMPACT ON EDUCATION

The society is rigged with various vices, in which drug abuse is one of the most prevalent. Drug abuse has not only affected students but also the society. Drug abuse has existed for several years and it has grown to be a disastrous force to reckon with among the youths and older ages in recent times.

According to the National Cancer Institute, drug abuse is defined as the excessive use of illegal drugs or the use of drugs without prescriptions for reasons different from why the drugs were manufactured. Drug abuse can also be defined as the illegal or excessive use of drugs without the doctor’s prescriptions.

Drug abuse has affected various sectors of the society in which the educational factor is one of the most affected sector. Because of the increase in drug abuse, the educational system has witnessed a decline in the interests of youths in education, which contributes to the uncertainty of the future of the youths.?The percent of students who do drugs in schools is now at an alarming rate.

Commonly Abused Drugs by Youths/Students

Various drugs have been confirmed to be the most abused drugs by youths. These drugs include;

1.?????Cocaine?

2.?????Heroine?

3.?????Codeine?

4.?????Marijuana?

5.?????Stimulants?

6.?????Tramadol?

7.?????Cannabis?

These above drugs, among other drugs, are the most abused drugs among youths. These drugs have helped increase the addiction of youths to drugs, therefore affecting their academic and social life as a student and a member of a society.?

Effects of Drug Abuse on student’s education?

The menace of drug abuse has brought about various negative effects on education and the society. The following are some effects of drug abuse on education. They include;?

1.?????Declining grades: drug abuse causes addiction, hence affecting the concentration of the students. Therefore, with loss of concentration, the student gains low grades, therefore destabilizing their academic performance and the educational standard of such country.?

2.?????Low cognitive abilities: drugs abuse affects the cognitive part of the brain, hence with the abuse of drugs a student's cognitive processes is negatively affected. This causes such student to lose the ability to think clearly, therefore affecting the education of such student.?

3.?????Violence: drug abuse triggers unhealthy behaviors and violence among students. This behavior causes violence in the school system, which can lead to closure of schools and educational institutions?

4.?????Increase in numbers of dropouts: drug abuse makes students lose interest in education, therefore compelling them to ignore their education and focus on their addiction. This reduces the number of educated people in the society and increases the number of dropouts and hooligans in the society.?

Solutions to the menace of drug abuse in the society?

1.?????Sensitization on the dangers of drug abuse in the society: leading of campaigns on drug abuse will help reduce the involvement of students and youths in drug abuse in the society.

2.?????Parents and guardians should be familiar with their children and ward activities: parents and guardians should ensure they are kept abreast on what their children and wards do. This will help them identify if their children are involved in drug abuse and curb or help them desist from such act before they become addicted.?

3.?????Provide support for drug abusers and provide rehabilitation for them: providing support and rehabilitation for already apprehended drug abusers will reduce the number of drug abusers in the system and help ensure these rehabilitated drug abuse go back to their education and make the most out of it.?

Drug abuse is a serious act that has many consequences, hence as students and youths it is important to desist from the act, focus on your education and life and promote abstinence from unnecessary use of drugs. SAY NO TO DRUG ABUSE, SAY YES TO A HEALTHY LIFE.?SAY YES TO QUALITY EDUCATION
