Overview

Divorce significantly impacts well-being on all levels — biological, psychological, social and spiritual (Felix, et al, 2013). In the spirit of Men’s Health Month an in the wake of Anthony Bourdain’s suicide this month’s Twitter Chat will focus on how men live through the often difficult transition of separation and divorce. Why? According to research published in the American Journal of Men’s Health, divorce increases the rate of early mortality by up to 250 percent resulting from increased hypertension, substance use, depression and more. In fact, mounting evidence suggests that the consequences of divorce on men are much higher than they are for women. For instance, for every divorced woman that dies by suicide, over nine divorced men killed themselves (Kposowa, 2003).

Join us as we engage a diverse panel in this conversation of “surviving, thriving and starting over” through the process of divorce and beyond. Our panel includes several men with lived experience with divorce who now support other men going through this life transition. Other panelists represent mental health and divorce support organizations equipped to share current research and best practices.

Questions We Will Discuss

Q1: Why are you passionate about the topic of men surviving divorce? Do you have a story to share about your own resilience through this transition or stories about others that you have helped? What have been your personal lessons learned?

Q2: Why might men who are going through separation and divorce vulnerable to depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts?

Q3: What does the research say about men and divorce? What increases risk? What promotes resilience?

Q4: Moving forward, what can we put in place to help men with this transition? What systems or "safety nets" need to be part of the support?
