Men As Christ / Use It or Lose It

Matthew 5:13-16:
Jesus said to his disciples: “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.”

A lot of folks lay claim on the phrase, “use it or lose it”. As with a lot of life’s lessons, this one comes directly from the Bible. We are all born with Gifts, but, if we don’t “use” them, we will “lose” them. Whether it’s a great intellect, natural athletic ability, an incredible capacity for listening, leading, etc., if we don’t work with the Lord’s Guidance to develop these Talents, then God might determine one day that He no longer has a need for them. I don’t know too many people that would purposely, overtly disappoint God. When we disappoint God, it’s usually by accident or incidence. But, as Believers, we become a lot more aware of God’s Gifts and His expectations for us as stewards of those Gifts. Whether we’re Salt (e.g. solid, hands-on Disciples), a city on a mountain (e.g. gifted leaders), or lamps (e.g. Believers), as God’s Chosen, we are all Called to let Jesus shine in and around us for all to see (no matter what the circumstances are). And, just like the infamous children’s hymn suggests, we need to let this “Little Light” of ours’ shine for Him. So, let It shine, let It shine, let It shine…
