Men As Christ (MAC) / Trying...Yoda Was Wrong

Luke 6:39-45

Jesus told his disciples a parable, “Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? No disciple is superior to the teacher; but when fully trained, every disciple will be like his teacher. Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own? How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’ when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye? You hypocrite! Remove the wooden beam from your eye first; then you will see clearly to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye. “A good tree does not bear rotten fruit, nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit. For every tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not pick figs from thornbushes, nor do they gather grapes from brambles. A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good, but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil; for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.”

The Gospel this week reminds me of the saying, “it’s like the blind leading the blind”. There will never be a time in this life when any of us will be perfect. It’s just not possible in our humanity to be perfect. But, Jesus doesn’t call us to perfection – He calls us to a constant “try”. Yoda, a jedi sage from the “Star Wars” movies, famously-quoted once, “Do or do not; there is no try”. Yoda was wrong. All that we have in this world is “try”. Sure, we will all do things for the rest of our lives, but the results are not the point of this life. The point is to try each and every day to the best of our abilities while constantly seeking Jesus’ help. When we finally learn how to do something successfully, we can then turn to those around us and show them the Way. A good example of this is like the airline safety video reminding passengers on how to put on their air masks if there is a drop in cabin pressure BEFORE helping others. It’s only after Jesus helps us to successfully put on our Air masks of Faith that we are able to Breathe appropriately and then turn to give His Air to others. Helping each other is key – that’s the Living Church that He established here on earth. Let’s be sure to keep trying each and every day. Let’s be Faithful. Listening to Him, Obeying His Word, and Trusting the Results to Him is the only “Trying” that we ever have to do. It’s in the crushing and pressing that He’s making New Wine in all of us.
