Luke 12:13-21
Someone in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, tell my brother to share the inheritance with me.” He replied to him, “Friend, who appointed me as your judge and arbitrator?” Then he said to the crowd, “Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one’s life does not consist of possessions.” Then he told them a parable. “There was a rich man whose land produced a bountiful harvest. He asked himself, ‘What shall I do, for I do not have space to store my harvest?’ And he said, ‘This is what I shall do: I shall tear down my barns and build larger ones. There I shall store all my grain and other goods and I shall say to myself, “Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry!”’ But God said to him, ‘You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’ Thus will it be for all who store up treasure for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God.”

When I was very young, we were dirt poor – I mean literally; our front yard in our rented home was more dirt than grass (which I loved, because it made for fantastic race tracks for my toy cars). Through Faith, hard work, and Grace, my Parents sacrificed for us Kids and we eventually moved on to life in the U.S. middle class. But, being poor never really leaves you – and, that’s a Grace thing. I remember the first time that I introduced my future Wife to my Folks at a Family Reunion at Eisenhower State Park in New York. We were all having a great time and, then, there was a moment that would change my life forever. A very sweet homeless woman came over to our group of picnic tables and asked if we would share some of our food with her. My Mother, Aunts, and every other Woman nearby went into “servant-mode” big-time and sat her down, loaded up her plate and cup, and proceeded to sit-down and visit with her while she ate (she also went home with some money in her pocket and a very nice ‘doggie-bag’ of food). I think that that was the moment my future Wife knew that she was in the “right” place with the “right” folks (and, when she fell in love with my Mom). You see, when we were poor, all kinds of folks shared with us – their time, money, food, clothing, etc. At a very young age, I was introduced to Jesus “in-action” via our Family, Friends, and Community. Jesus is the Ultimate Sharer (ultimately giving His Life and Crown for us). Just take a look around and within you to see all of His Blessings in your life. He has so many Blessings that He wants to share with us all of the time. Like a young Father encouraging His toddler to take another step and another and another, Jesus is always cheering for us. He always Believes in us even when we don’t Believe in ourselves. The best way to experience Jesus is to share everything you have, are, etc. with Him and then to share that with others. The returns on those types of investments (talent, time, treasure) reflect back to us in this world and live on in Eternity. And, don’t worry when you stumble…Jesus is still with us encouraging us to get back up and try again. As the saying goes, we could learn a lot from a toddler…
